Substance use treatment services for youth, adolescents, and young adults
If your youth is struggling and you think drugs or alcohol may be involved, the right substance use treatment services can help support their recovery. PerformCare can help eligible youth access substance use treatment services if they meet the clinical criteria for care. Please call PerformCare at 1-877-652-7624 for more information about eligibility.
A proper assessment is the first step in finding the right treatment. Youth authorized for a Biopsychosocial (BPS) assessment through PerformCare may also receive a substance use screening as part of the assessment when indicated. PerformCare uses the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria to make clinical decisions about the most appropriate type of service. These decisions are made by Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LCADCs) who have specialized training.
If your youth is enrolled in a Care Management Organization (CMO) or involved with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P), talk to your Care Manager or case worker about other treatment services that may be available. You can also contact your health insurance provider (either private insurance or NJ FamilyCare) to find out about benefits for substance use treatment services.

Special information about consent for substance use treatment services
PerformCare is committed to protecting your privacy while providing quality services to youth and families. Substance use treatment services have stricter privacy rules than behavioral health and general health services. Youth who receive substance use treatment services through PerformCare must give their own consent for treatment and for the release of their records. Parents cannot access the substance use treatment portion of the record or sign on behalf of their youth without the youth’s consent.
